'Despicable Me 4' Dominates The Fourth Of July Holiday Box Office
Like it or not, the Minions are here to stay, as the fourth installment about a supervillain turned family man has been released. Despicable Me 4 dominated the box office during the Fourth of July weekend, with about $122.6 million over a five-day week, $75 million of which came from the three-day weekend. Thus, it has helped to cement the franchise’s status as the most successful animated film series of all time. Universal Pictures and Illumination are continuing to release Despicable Me, and its spin-off, the Minions films, to theaters, and are continuing to make lots of money off of them.
The first Despicable Me was released on June 9, 2010, by Universal Pictures and produced by Illumination. The film centered around a down-on-his-luck supervillain, Gru, voiced by Steve Carrel, adopting three orphans as part of a plot to steal the moon. However, he soon grows attached to them. The film was a massive success, spawning three sequels, two spinoffs, and a lot of merchandise, most of which centered around the minions, little yellow cylindrical creatures that serve as Gru’s, well, Minions. This franchise doesn’t show any signs of stopping anytime soon, and will likely see a new release soon.
