DC And Marvel Set To Reprint Their Crossover Event Comics

Between 1976 and 2004, the two titans of comic publishing, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics, occasionally joined forces to produce crossover story arcs featuring beloved characters from both universes, either fighting each other or working together against a common enemy.

The demand for these issues has been huge, and they have been out of print for a long time. Those who have been unable to find them (or unwilling to pay the ridiculous prices at the secondary market) can rejoice now, as Marvel and DC will reprint these issues as two massive omnibuses later this summer. With one major exception, this is.

RELATED:

The first omnibus will include the very first publication of this kind, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man from 1976, and feature all succeeding crossover stories until 2000's Batman/Daredevil, with face-offs like Batman vs. Spider-Man, Daredevil vs. Batman or Superman against The Hulk. Artists, who have worked on these comics include Dennis O’Neil, George Pérez, Dan Jurgens, Chris Claremont, Walter Simonson, J.M. DeMatteis, Mark Bagley, Gerry Conway, and John Romita Jr.

When these stories were initially published, the number of issues was equally divided between Marvel and DC, with one half titled DC vs Marvel and the other Marvel vs. DC.

The second omnibus will collect the so-called Amalgam Universe. Initially set for publication in 1983/1984, but then scrapped due to unresolved issues between the two companies, this crossover was finally released in 1996 with a completely new story: The two separate universes of Marvel and DC are fused into a third one, creating characters like Super Soldier (a mixture of Superman and Captain America), Dark Claw (Batman and Wolverine) or Iron Lantern (Iron Man and Green Lantern).

Notably missing from the planned reprint are the JLA/Avengers comics, the last cooperation of this kind between Marvel and DC so far. These comics were originally published in 2003/2004 and written by Kurt Busiek, with art by George Pérez. In this miniseries, heroes from the Justice League of America and The Avengers are pitched against each other to obtain 12 cosmic artifacts, to prevent the destruction of their respective universe.

The DC Versus Marvel and the DC/Marvel: The Amalgam Age omnibuses will be available on August 6, 2024.
