Daytime TV Host Jerry Springer Has Passed Away At The Age Of 79
Influential daytime television host and former mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio Jerry Springer passed away today on April 27, 2023 in his Chicago home at the age of 79. Springer invented the modern talk show format with his patented brand of controversy and topical issues. The Jerry Springer Show became a cultural phenomenon, running for twenty-seven years in ten countries. The iconic chair throws, and the “Jerry,” and “Big Steve” chants became ingrained into the millennial zeitgeist. It also spawned an award-winning opera The Jerry Springer Opera
Born in a London tube station, Jerry Springer moved to the United States at the age of four and settled in Queens, New York. A law graduate from Northwestern University, Jerry Springer soon became entrenched in affairs of state. Heavily influenced by John F. Kennedy, he started his political career as an adviser to Robert F. Kennedy. He fought several campaigns on behalf of the Democrats and was not afraid to tell the truth about his flaws “even if it hurts.”
Springer could never be accused of taking himself too seriously. He was always happy to poke fun at his talk show via a comedy cameo in shows like Sabrina The Teenage Witch and The Simpsons. Jerry Springer put down his host’s microphone to become a reality TV star in Dancing With the Stars and The Masked Singer. America got behind him and he performed respectably in both.
Loved by his family, his community, and his colleagues, Jerry Springer’s sense of humor and tireless work ethic will never be forgotten. “Take care of yourself and each other.”
