David Corsenswet is the DC Universe’s new Superman and is already developing a plan for performing the Man of Steel in the upcoming 2025 film Superman: Legacy. News broke last week of Corsenswet donning the blue and red superhero tights of the new son of Krypton and Rachel Brosnahan as Daily Bugle reporter Lois Lane.

Corsenswet spoke with Entertainment Weekly in 2019 during a promotion tour for Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Hollywood. The actor shared his aspiration to one day become Superman, “But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman].”

During the last few months, as casting rumors bounced back and forth through the internet, many fans observed how similar David Corenswet’s features were to Henry Cavill, who was Superman throughout Zack Synder’s universe of films. Corenswet is well aware of the resemblance and hopes to make an impression with fans, “It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me…I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.” Cavill donned the red cape for Zack Synder’s Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and both iterations of the Justice League films.

The upbeat and optimistic take on Superman also seems to fall in line with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s aspirations. Recently, Gunn spoke with Variety about his process in casting the new Superman, and Gunn said, “The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug.”

According to James Gunn, the script for Superman: Legacy is complete and will focus on Clark Kent’s struggle as both Superman and Clark Kent. Luckily, Gunn completed the screen only days before the Writer’s Guild of America strike.

Corenswet’s work so far in his career has been supporting roles in The Politician and Hollywood, with a lead credit alongside Mia Goth in Pearl.

Superman: Legacy will release in theatres on July 11, 2025.
