The latest D23 event was packed with cool set displays, announcements, teasers, and presentations, and it wouldn’t be D23 without an exciting Star Wars-related event. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau took to the stage to tease the latter’s upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu. Favreau confirmed that filming has recently begun. While the teaser clip was convention-exclusive footage, reports surrounding what was shown have been released.

Bounty hunting is still a career focus for the character, but the exact degree has shifted with the kid being involved, as a voiceover of Din affirms, “We’re bounty hunters by trade. Now that he’s with me, I’ll be selective about my assignments.”  Star Wars: Rebels character Garazeb ‘Zeb’ Orrelios made an appearance in Chapter 21 of The Mandalorian. He’s returning in some capacity for the film, interacting with the main pair. There are many icy planets in Star Wars, some of which have been visited on-screen; the specific planet shown hasn’t been named, but there are a fair few options for which one it could be. A possible All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport (AT-RT) is wrangled down a hill at some point in the face of AT-ATs, and Snowtroopers jump into action as well.

The DCL Blog got a moment with Filoni and Favreau on a carpet at D23 to discuss the upcoming film. Favreau expressed excitement for the project, “To come back together and to have the scale and scope of the big screen to tell the story with characters that people already know in a brand-new adventure.” There may be some easter eggs to look out for, as Favreau continued, “Part of what we’re setting out to do is to have something that rewards people who have been with the show since the beginning, been with Star Wars since the beginning.” This project isn’t just for long-time fans, the director explained, “But also since we’re on the big screen it’s an opportunity to reach out with a new adventure to a whole new audience.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently scheduled to release on May 22, 2026. It will be the first Star Wars film to be released since 2019. The specific plot of the duo’s adventure is being kept under wraps. If you want to refresh your memory and relive the adventures that brought them to this point, all three seasons of The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney+.
