Dave Filoni And Jon Favreau Talk About The Future Of 'Star Wars' In A New Interview

Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni

It is Star Wars season again with The Mandalorian Season 3 premiering this past Wednesday. For the occasion, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni sat down with Germain Lussier of io9 to shed some light on what is to come in the future of the saga.

Favreau and Filoni were asked about the difficulty of “balancing Pandora’s box of fan expectations” as well as how The Mandalorian and its characters would fit in the bigger picture. Favreau explained that the Mandalorian is “only seeing a sliver of what’s going on” in the galaxy and that is what drives Favreau to make Din Djarin and Grogu interact with different characters after having established their identity in the show:

“The whole first season...though there were Easter eggs ... we steered completely clear [of direct reference]. But in Season Two, because we had already established ourselves, we were definitely open to what could or should overlap.”

Picking who to join the party was one of the hardest decisions. While this also applied to Bo-Katan and Ahsoka, Favreau explained how it was especially true when they thought about bringing Luke Skywalker into the show.

“It doesn’t make sense for it to be anybody else but Luke…it has to be in service of the story and the character development.”

Not only did the unexpected appearance of Luke took the fans by surprise, but it also served a real purpose in the story as he allowed Grogu to progress as a character as he continued his Jedi training as seen in The Book of Boba Fett.

In regards to the overall universe, Favreau explained how tying all these characters together is essential to widen the vision of what is happening in the galaxy. This is important in Favreau’s and Filoni’s decision-making as they look to the future of all these series:

“The story that we’re telling is definitely growing to resolution in certain areas. I think a lot is going to key on things that are now being revealed as we’re coordinating in the same time frame…The audience is going to experience things through other characters’ eyes, and I think that’s going to speak to what’s happening in the larger context.”
