In most debates regarding the Sequel Trilogy, Rey as a character will come into the conversation. A particular detail people will run with is the subject of her lineage; The Last Jedi set her up to be from nobody, while The Rise of Skywalker revealed her to be the granddaughter of Palpatine. The messages these different origins convey are different, adding fuel to the fire. The actress who brought Rey to life, Daisy Ridley, has recently given her two cents on the matter in an interview with Rolling Stone.

Ridley gave an interesting view on the subject, stating, “What was interesting about the last one, for me, was that you can be a hero and not come from anywhere or you can be a hero and come from literally the worst person in the universe.” The message went from a specific origin not mattering to a general one; you aren’t defined by the past no matter what that past is.

The result is something Ridley is proud of either way. The outcome was “beyond [her] pay grade,” but she reaffirmed her feelings on the matter: “I do love the version of, you can be anyone you want to be, but I also love the version where you can rectify wrongs and can’t help what you’re born into.”

The actress wraps the entire topic up perfectly, stating:

“Everyone knows how things are and how they can be. We’re all living in that, with people saying more than they need to and commenting more than they need to. It’s so individual. Find the good in it all and enjoy it.”

The Sequel Trilogy, as well as Episodes I-VI, are available to stream on Disney+. Ridley’s latest film, Sometimes I Think About Dying, premiered during the Sundance Film Festival and is available on Apple iTunes.
