Daisy Ridley: All About Her Return As Rey
It’s been nearly a decade since Daisy Ridley’s iconic Star Wars character, Rey, was first introduced to the galaxy. The last time her character was on the big screen, Rey put the Skywalker’s sabers to rest and declared herself a part of their family and lineage; whether Ridley was going to come back or not was a bit up in the air until the film currently known as Star Wars: New Jedi Order was announced. In an interview with Empire Magazine for their The Acolyte issue, Ridley discussed her return as the Jedi.
Regarding growth and having a different feel for the character, Ridley explained, “I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it. I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now. I certainly did not feel like an adult at the time.” She continued, “Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I’ve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it’s a different thing this time.”

The decision to return wasn’t “difficult,” but it wasn’t immediate either; the still-unknown specific story of the upcoming film helped to sway her. Ridley discussed the decision, “I didn’t say yes right away, Kathy was like, ‘Take as long as you need.’ Why wouldn’t I [do it]? Yes, they have been divisive, but also they bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people.” Specifically addressing her character, Ridley continued, “It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character – like, can I even remember how to play her? It’s an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what’s changed for me and what’s changed for her.” Being set so far after the last film, the character has had the opportunity to grow off-screen alongside Ridley.
Plot specificities for the upcoming film Star Wars: New Jedi Order are being kept under wraps outside of it being set 15 years after Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019), vaguely following Rey as she works to reform the Jedi Order in an upset galaxy. It will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who has also directed several episodes of Ms. Marvel (2022) and Sitara: Let Girls Dream (2019), among other projects. The film is aiming to release in 2026.
