'Star Wars' Screenwriter Gives More Information About Taika Watiti's Movie
Following the tremendous success directing Thor: Ragnarok, it really was inevitable that Taiki Waititi would be back to direct a follow-up. Currently, he is working on the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. However, Star Wars fans received a pleasant surprise when it was announced he would be given the chance to helm a film set within the galaxy far, far away. Now, it is obvious this new film is going to be on the back burner while Waititi works on Thor, but his screenwriting partner Krysty Wilson-Cairns has given an update on the Star Wars project, which suggests more work has been completed on it than we originally thought.
Wilson-Cairns recently spoke with Variety and gave an update on her work with the project, saying:
“You have to research, study and spend a lot of time to get it right. It’s really important to honor not only your commitment to it but also to the legions of fans out there.”

As with any big project nowadays, especially Star Wars and Disney related ones, all important information such as plot details, its place in the timeline, characters, etc. is kept completely under wraps and Wilson-Cairns is not willing to give anything else away. When talking to IFilm, she makes it clear that she is uncomfortable talking about the project and jokes about the repercussions of doing so saying:
“It’s dangerous you’re asking these questions. You know if I answer incorrectly, Mickey Mouse will burst into this room and beat me up? And I was in therapy for years about that fear, so it’s clear and present.”
While it all seems to have been said in jest, we do know from history that the House of Mouse does try to come down hard on those deemed to have revealed too much, as well as taking some drastic measures to avoid spoilers (like not letting actors read full scripts or giving them lines at a time). However, she does go on to say why she is excited about working on the project, and why the fans should be too.
“What I love about Star Wars is that they’re incredibly transformative. There’s a little bit of nostalgia in them, but they can change and adapt with the times. So, I think, yeah, I’ll watch Star Wars all day [and that] is what I love about them.”
Despite not revealing very much, her comments do mirror those of Waikiti’s himself. When he spoke about the new project with Wired UK, he said:
“…we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me. I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and them then going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”
With Love and Thunder currently set for a May 2022 release, it will not be long before Waikiti is ready to move on to his next project and it could very well be Star Wars. When talking to the Sydney Morning Herald he said:
“I don’t know if that’s going to be Star Wars. I Hope it’ll be that but there’s a whole lot of other little things that I’ve got my sticky little fingers attached to, so we’ll see.”
Personally, I cannot wait to see his Star Wars interpretation. Many Marvel fans and I agree that he single-handedly saved the Thor franchise and with the recent trilogy of films from the galaxy far, far away causing so much divide, Waikiti’s take could very well be the fresh air that the film side of the franchise desperately needs. His ability to merge comedy and drama so effortlessly could make for a very interesting film indeed.
As of now, no release or production date has been set for this new Star Wars film, but as always, we shall keep you updated as more information becomes known.
Until next time!
