Unknown Mandalorian Spotted In Set Photos for 'The Mandalorian' Season 3

Although The Book of Boba Fett may be on everyone’s mind at the moment, Star Wars fans still look forward to Season 3 of The Mandalorian, which is due to be released sometime late next year. A huge hit for Disney+ in its first few seasons, the continuing adventures of Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, are sure to bring in plenty of viewers. With even more Star Wars content on the way in 2022 and beyond, including the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries, fans are sure to remain hyped for at least a year or two.

With the Grogu storyline over, for now at least, many fans speculate that the Darksaber will play a part in the new season’s storyline. Though initially overshadowed by Luke Skywalker, complete with a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill, these discussions have increased among the Star Wars fandom for the past month or so as we approach the release date for Book of Boba Fett. It appears that these discussions will soon begin to dominate any discussions of the series.

Filming for Season 3 of The Mandalorian is already underway, and new set photos and a video have fueled further speculation about potential storylines. These pictures show off what appear to be a new character for the season, another Mandalorian. Though hard to tell with all the blur, the actor’s armor is clearly Mandalorian in design, right down to the jetpack attached to his back. He can be seen looking out from what appears to be a giant blue screen in the shooting location. Is is currently unknown who the actor is.

When we last left our eponymous character, he had won a decisive duel against Moff Gideon, played by Giancarlo Esposito. As a result, he had acquired the legendary Darksaber, a dark colored lightsaber that granted control of the Mandalorian homeworld to its wielder. The implications of this were glossed over, but it is clear that there will be consequences for this in the upcoming season.

One of Din’s allies during this duel was Bo-Katan Kryze, played by Katee Sackoff. Bo-Katan was a former member of the terrorist group Death Watch who later became a wielder of the Darksaber. Having lost it some time between the events of Star Wars: Rebels and The Mandalorian, Bo-Katan made it clear that she intended to retake the saber and with it, control of Mandalore. With the saber currently in Din Djarin’s possession, it is highly likely that the two will come to blows.

This likely explains who the mysterious Mandalorian is, at least in part. Bo-Kata is not alone, so this may be one of her followers. Whether or not he will be a main character is currently unknown, though his appearance indicates that more Mandalorians will be appearing in Season 3. With the Darksaber in Din Djarin’s hands, it is almost certain that Season 3 will be delving deeper into Mandalorian society and culture, and possibly even its history. We will just have to watch to find out what will happen next as The Mandalorian returns to Disney+ in 2022.

As stated before, Season 3 of The Mandalorian is just one of many Star Wars projects coming to Disney+ next year. In addition to The Book of Boba Fett, there are also Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, and The Acolyte among others, slated for the streaming service. With The Mandalorian at the center of it all, the galaxy far, far away continues to delight audiences and leaves them wanting more. 2022 is looking to be a great year for Star Wars fans. Regardless of your thoughts on the Disney buyout, it seems as though the company can take the franchise in the right direction. Hopefully, we will continue to see some great Star Wars content.
