New Promotional Art For ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Series Revealed By Lucasfilm
With May the 4th drawing ever closer, the slow drip of images from the Kenobi original series on Disney+ is bound to increase. Today was no exception as Lucasfilm has released a new promo image for the show. Everyone who is waiting with bated breath for the new series is going nuts on Twitter, as the image shows the Jedi Master and his former apprentice, now Sith Lord, Darth Vader facing opposite directions with an image of what appears to be the two of them fighting between them.
Obi-Wan's face shows a determined Jedi Master, his eyes facing toward Vader's helmet while his face is ever so slightly facing away. This could indicate some inner turmoil in Obi-Wan leading up to the rematch of the two former best friends. Perhaps it is foreshadowing that Obi-Wan is still conflicted about Anakin, when they last met, Obi-Wan had left Anakin for dead on the banks of a Mustafarian lava river. Throughout the whole fight preceding this, we see Obi-Wan trying again and again to convince Anakin to return to the light. Culminating in Obi-Wan warning Anakin not to try and press the attack, as Obi-Wan has the advantage and, more importantly, he feels he couldn't bring himself to kill his former Padawan. Obi-Wan even begged Yoda to let him fight the Emperor, as he knew he wouldn't be able to kill his former pupil.

It is a safe assumption that Obi-Wan still feels very conflicted over Anakin and his destiny. Now living on Tatooine and watching Anakin's son from afar, Obi-Wan has had plenty of time to reflect on those final moments and try to rid himself of the attachment and sense of failure he has towards Anakin. Whether or not Master Kenobi succeeds in this endeavor before we see him onscreen again remains to be seen. But it wouldn't surprise us to see Obi-Wan again pleading for Anakin to return to the light and walk the path of the Jedi once more.
Conversely, we see Vader facing away from his old master and, by extension, his old life, showing his commitment to his Emperor and their new Empire. However, we should note that his helmet is facing down ever so slightly as to give the appearance of contemplation. Perhaps whatever leads us to the rematch we have so eagerly awaited will make Vader doubt himself and his path. Maybe Obi-Wan tells him a half truth about Padme's death, specifically the moment she says that she believes there is still good in Anakin. Proving that, even as she lay dying, she believed he could be redeemed.
No matter what happens in the series, we are very excited for the next chapter in Obi-Wan's journey. And the newest release of promotional material does a lot to stoke that excitement. We look forward to the release of the first two episodes of Kenobi on May 27th, just two days after the anniversary of A New Hope's theatrical release in 1977. However, for right now, this drip of new promotional material will have to sate the hunger of every Star Wars fan on the planet.
