The game developer Bungie, best known for Halo and long-running developers of the Destiny franchise, is being sued by a Louisiana man for supposed copyright infringement.

Plaintiff Kelsey Martineau, who published stories on WordPress.com back in 2013 and 2014 under a pen name, states that Bungie directly lifted elements from one of these stories for the launch campaign of Destiny 2, which was released in 2017.

This campaign, entitled The Red War, featured the leader of the Cabal Empire, Dominus Ghaul, coming to the Sol system and chaining the Traveler, a huge white para causal sphere that granted humanity a golden age centuries ago. In the era of Destiny gameplay, the Traveler is the source of the player character’s resurrection and many other powers through small robots called Ghosts. The Red War explored the impact of losing one’s Light (the power of the Traveler) due to Ghaul’s chaining of the Traveler through a variety of NPCs and the player character.

Martineau’s claim against Bungie has an extensive list of apparent similarities between the two stories, with much of the focus on both narratives containing an enemy faction called the Red Legion and claiming similarities between Destiny’s Dominus Ghaul and Marineau’s Overlord Yinnerah.

Martineau’s suit looks to stop the distribution of all content related to the apparently copied storylines. Bungie has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
