Audiences everywhere are proving that you can have the best of both worlds at the movies this summer. AMC has reported that 20,000 of its Stubs members have already booked tickets to the release of both Barbie and Oppenheimer on July 21. Both films feature powerhouse casts and are helmed by two of Hollywood’s most beloved modern directors.

Barbie, from director Greta Gerwig of Ladybird and Little Women fame, fleshes out the story of the sensationally iconic and perennially pink doll (Margot Robbie), and her lovably daft boyfriend, Ken (Ryan Gosling). Conversely, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer takes a devastating look at the scientist behind the creation of the atomic bomb. The docudrama’s dark, heavy subject could not stand in sharper contrast to the pink exuberance and joyful silliness of Barbie’s promotional materials; however, the two names have become inextricably linked in the conversation about this summer’s most anticipated movies.

There was initial disappointment when it was announced months ago that the two vastly different films would premiere on the same day; reports emerged that Nolan was “upset” about the dual release. However, the almost comically stark contrast between the two movies has been embraced by social media, with fans dubbing the occasion “Barbenheimer”. Debates emerged over which movie theatergoers should experience first, and double-feature events are popping up in theaters across the country.

The enthusiasm with which audiences have embraced the prospect of seeing both movies in one day (though Oppenheimer clocks in at a hefty three hours) has renewed excitement about summer movies in a way that few cinematic events have in recent years. Whether you plan to see Barbie or Oppenheimer first, get ready to experience the gripping tale of an extremely influential historical figure—in both black and white, and pink.
