Thanks to recent news first reported by Cinelinx, we have learned a standalone Black Canary film is in early development at HBO Max. The film will reportedly be written by writer Misha Green and will see Jurnee Smollett reprise the role of Dinah Lance, aka Black Canary.

Smollett's Black Canary was introduced in 2020's Birds of Prey, in which she is depicted as a burlesque dancer. During the events of the film, we see her rescue Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) from a potential abduction and eventually become the driver for the crime lord Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor). She would later betray Ronan and reveal her super ability to produce screaming at a screams at a supersonic level.

It's safe to say people didn't expect much from Birds of Prey, but myself and many others were pleasantly surprised by the film, and I, for one, actually quite enjoyed it. Its success and popularity meant it was only a matter of time before some sort of sequel was announced, and it looks like we are getting one, just not in the traditional sense. It's a long ways away, but this announcement means we are going to be seeing more of Black Canary and have her story continue on. This could also be the start of a potential new series for DC to explore, focusing on characters not as high profile or well known.

Despite it being early days, we know it's going to be written by Misha Green and produced by Sue Kroll, under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner. This makes sense considering Kroll also produced Birds of Prey. There's no director attached to the project as of yet, so it's unclear whether or not Green will direct and write or just write, however her upcoming busy schedule means, regardless, it's going to be some time before the project moves into a proper production stage. As it stands at the moment, Green is writing and producing The Mother. An action-thriller starring Jennifer Lopez for Netflix. She is also attached to direct a Tomb Raider 2 for MGM, so she has quite a lot on her plate.

The same can also be said for Jurnee Smollett as well. She has two films ready to come out on Netflix - Escape From Spiderhead, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, as well as Lou, alongside Allison Janney.

DC have found themselves in a bit of a losing battle when it comes to the superhero genre over the last few years, thanks mostly to the mammoth success of rival company Marvel. A lot of fans have taken to social media of late to express what they believe the issue to be, and one of the most common answers is the fact it's the same characters getting rebooted all the time. Your Supermans, Batmans, etc. So it makes sense for them to change direction a little and look at developing lesser known characters. Many fans thoroughly enjoyed Smollet's take on the character, so it'll be interesting to see her get her own film.

It's worth noting this isn't the only recent DC superhero film announcement recently. We know HBO Max are developing a Batgirl film starring Leslie Grace and a Blue Beetle film starring Xolo Mariduena. They will also be developing a Black Superman series alongside producer Michael B. Jordan, as first reported by Collider. These new instalments could help DC build something new for people to enjoy and, if nothing else, shine some of the spotlight on some of our lesser known heroes.

As always, we will keep you updated with more information as and when it develops.

Until next time!
