BioWare Veteran Leaves To Form New Studio Focusing On Narrative-Centered Games

Worlds Untold is a new studio being opened by Chinese publisher NetEase and will be helmed by Mac Walters. Based in Vancouver, Worlds Untold’s new CEO previously worked at BioWare, with an over 20-year career as a writer on the Mass Effect series and other projects of BioWare.

“We’re creating incredibly meaningful stories that we believe are best told and experienced through play,” Walters said in the studio’s introduction press release. “We are starting by crafting worlds that we all dream of discovering and then we’ll put the player in the leading role of the most unforgettable adventures. The team at NetEase Games shares our vision and passion to utilize leading-edge technology to create the best possible new games. Their teams’ support and creative freedom affords us the opportunity to deliver on that vision.”

There are more than just Walters as part of the veterans in the games industry at Worlds Untold. Audio Director Sotaro Tojima has worked on popular series such as Metal Gear Solid and Halo. Head of Production Elizabeth Lehtonen has worked on series such as Dragon Age and The Sims. Head of Art Ramil Sunga and Head of Technology Ben Goldstein also have roughly two decades within the games industry.

Within the press release, Worlds Untold is described as a AAA studio that will create interactive narratives that blur the line between games and film, creating “immersion and engagement with their worlds and characters unlike any other.” Though the studio is based in Vancouver, Canada, it is said to be a fully remote working opportunity to give it global reach within the industry. Though their first game will be years out, it will be interesting to see what this studio can produce.
