It seems that the divide over the reception of The Rings of Power continues on, despite an overwhelmingly well-reviewed first season, as Bernard Hill, known for playing King Théoden in the Jackson adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, has weighed in on the show.

“It’s a money-making venture, and I’m not interested in watching that or being in it…Good luck to them and all that stuff, but it’s not like the real thing,”

Hill said to Metro in an interview. It’s unclear what he means by “the real thing,” but it seems to reflect some of the online distaste regarding the show not strictly following canon. The purchase of the TV rights for The Lord of the Rings and the appendices was hefty at nearly a quarter-billion dollars, the show’s first season costing over 450 million dollars, and the series in total is said to have a staggering one billion in funding. However, it remains to be seen if the show has actually made money for the giant company.

Metro also asked the actor if he thought things should have stopped after The Lord of the Rings, to which he said yes. He continued by saying that he thought The Hobbit shouldn’t have been made. “They expanded it [but] I think you can only stretch a piece of elastic so far.” (Variety, 2022) Here it seems like his stance rests on strictly using the written material, as he takes exception to the “stretching” of The Hobbit into a trilogy, a thing Jackson did receive some criticism.

The story was stretched, but much of the material came from extra material that Tolkien had written. Tolkien had written extensively, including his notes about Middle-earth, on which Jackson relied heavily. The showrunners of The Rings of Power are doing the same, utilizing The Lord of the Rings and the appendices within the show’s framework. Stipulations by the Tolkien Estate in selling the TV rights to Amazon prevent the showrunners from blatantly breaking canon.

It’ll be some time before season two airs, as production is expected to run into 2024.

The Rings of Power’s first season can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
