Bear McCreary Announces That He And Sparks Shadows Wrote The Score For 'Percy Jackson And The Olympians'
When Bear McCreary started following Rick Riordan and the official Percy Jackson TV accounts on Twitter (X), this immediately led to rumors and speculations that the composer might be involved in the production of the upcoming Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Now, months later, McCreary confirmed on his own X account that these speculations are true, “I was especially excited to be a part of the new Percy Jackson series because it gave me the opportunity to embrace the kind of sweeping, melodically-driven orchestral scores that inspired me as a kid,” McCreary told Nerdbot. “Writing distinct and memorable themes for each character was a joy. I can’t wait for fans to hear what we came up with!”

Bear McCreary is a well-established composer in Hollywood. After graduating from USC Thornton School of Music, where he was the protegee of Elmer Bernstein, his first project was Battlestar Galactica (2004), first together with Richard Gibbs and later as the sole composer. Since then, he has worked on projects like The Walking Dead, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Black Mirror, The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power and Foundation, but has also scored films like Happy Death Day, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and video games like League of Legends or Call of Duty: Vanguard.
He founded Sparks and Shadows as a boutique record label in Los Angeles with the main purpose of releasing most of the composer's works.
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians wrapped filming in February and will premiere on Disney+ on December 20. Unlike the two previous films from Twentieth Century Fox (2010 and 2013), the new series will be much more faithful to the novels by Rick Riordan, who created the show and is heavily involved in the production of the series. Walker Scobell will star as the titular demigod who has to come to terms with his powers but also with the accusation of having stolen Zeus's thunderbolt. Also part of the main cast is Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, a daughter of Athena, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, Percy's best friend and a satyr disguised as a 12-year-old boy. Lance Reddick stars as Zeus, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes, and Toby Stephens as Poseidon.
