Former SAG President Says SAG-AFTRA Halloween Rules Set Back Strike

Halloween is coming up, and the only thing scarier than getting caught in another one of Jigsaw's traps is not receiving proper benefits for the job you do. For actors that are a part of the acting guild known as SAG-AFTRA, this has been an ongoing battle that they continue to hold against studios and production companies. Because of their lack of 'treats' the guild has resorted to a 'trick' instead; specifically, the guild has recently encouraged striking actors to not dress up as characters that come from the movies of struck studios. While we may not see Ryan Reynolds don a Deadpool suit and see a lack of "Barbie pink" on the picket line, actors are encouraged to dress in more standard Halloween flair, like zombies, ghosts, and even characters from non-struck media.

Not everyone is on board with this new guideline, however. Former president of SAG-AFTRA, Melissa Gilbert, posted her opinion on Instagram, with nothing positive to say. “I mean, do you really think this kind of infantile stuff is going to end the strike? We look like a joke. Please tell me you’re going to make this rule go away… and go negotiate!”

She also tagged current president, Fran Drescher, and chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, in another post to make sure they were aware of her view on the costume guideline. “For the love of God, people are suffering mightily and this is what you have to say… c’mon guys… This is the kind of silly bullsh*t that keeps us on strike. ‘Let’s enact a policy that makes us look petty and incompetent at the same time.’”

While SAG-AFTRA hasn't made much leeway with the AMPTP lately, Drescher stays optimistic that they'll reach an agreement that benefits the guild. “This too shall pass... But this is the moment where we don’t succumb to pressure. This is the moment where we stand tall and we hold firm.”
