BBC In Talks With Disney To Bring 'Doctor Who' To Disney+

Doctor Who on Disney XD

Something British is brewing in the streaming wars. Bloomberg reports that Disney is in very early talks with the BBC to stream Ncuti Gatwa’s first Doctor Who series. There’s no guarantee it will happen, but the only other detail given so far is that it would stream globally on the platform. That’s it.

Honestly, I wish it was weightier. If Disney is looking to “bulk up” on established entertainment, don’t bulk up just on names; bring the bulk of a library with it. It would be a heavy loss to HBO Max to lose all of NuWho (a revival of the Doctor Who universe), Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures, but I think it’s necessary to back up such a game plan. I’d also like to see the short-lived Twelve-era spinoff Class stream with the others. Maybe it’s only the new series because of HBO Max’s hold on everything up to Thirteen’s end. That contract has to end first. We still don’t know when exactly Fourteen’s first series is. It’s also reportedly just a series. I assume they’ll include Gatwa’s entire run eventually, but even then, it shouldn’t be separated from the first thirteen series.

Most people probably don’t know this, but Disney and the Doctor have a little history together, more directly than David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck. In the summer of 2015, Disney XD aired the Tenth Doctor era, albeit edited for typical kids’ show reasons. Unfortunately, it did not go so well. I’m not sure it made it all the way to “The End of Time,” to be quite honest with you. I think there needs to be a promise of substantial and timely results if this does come to pass. I’d be content if they stick with HBO Max, though.
