'Avatar: The Way Of Water' Crossed $1 Billion Worldwide, Putting The Film On Track To Make Over $2 Billion Before Its Theatrical Run Ends
Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron had high expectations for the second film of the franchise, and it seems likely they will be met as the film has crossed $1 billion globally. If current trends continue, the film is set to cross $2 billion before its theatrical run ends.
Having released on December 16, the opening weekend total was $435 million, which was just short of the predicted weekend total. Though it might have fallen short on that opening weekend, its box office total has continued to climb in the two weeks since its release, rising above high-profile releases from years past such as The Last Jedi and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. If it tracks true by current projections, it will be within the top ten highest-grossing films of all time before the first week of the new year is over.
While more accurate projections have still to be released, it certainly comes as no surprise that the sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time is seeing this amount of success. The projection of when it hits $2 billion will be interesting to see, but of more interest to those who follow such data is whether it can surpass the original film.
