The Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been released, with many reviews about the series finding their way online. On February 22, the Rotten Tomatoes rating sat at a 68% critic response from 19 reviews. That has fallen in the days that followed as more reviews were collected.

Quite a few of the negative reviews mention how the series feels created by an algorithm, such as the 1.5/5 review of Rafael Motamayor on Discussing Film. “This feels like a show made by an algorithm catered to the kind of fans that hate filler and side stories in animation and hates when characters make jokes.” Randy Dankievitch, writing for Processed Media, provided the series with an F, stating “As if constructed by AI, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is flat and soulless, obsessed with the destination at the expense of the journey.”

Maya Phillips, writing for the New York Times, shares the same sentiment, saying that the series “tries so desperately to rework its stories that the pacing often suffers; adventures become a bit too convoluted, and there’s so much stacked action that it’s easy to lose track of the stakes and sense of urgency in any one plotline.” That action is perfect for some, with Anita Singh’s 3/5 review for the Daily Telegraph saying “It’s solid entertainment: fast-moving, action-packed, with decent fight scenes and some appealing performances.”

While some have criticised the story, others have praised it, with Elijah Gonzalez of Paste Magazine awarding the series a 7.5/10, stating “Despite its imperfections, it still manages to make good on the sturdy bones of this tale, expressing the personal journeys wrapped up in this grandiose, world-threatening quest.” Paul Tassi, writing for Forbes, sums up the positive energy fans have expressed for this series. “I count the original as one of my favourite shows ever, and I have to say Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is much better than I thought it would be. By the end, I genuinely enjoyed it.”

CultureSlate is currently writing reviews for each episode, with Jeremy Brown covering the entire first season. In the first episode review, which was awarded an 8/10, the final line states “If the rest of the season is as well done as this first episode, we’re in for a real treat, both fans and newcomers alike.”
