The iteration of the long running Assassin’s Creed franchise that fans have wanted to see is finally coming to consoles, just a little later than they had hoped.

Last week, it was revealed that Assassin’s Creed: Shadows would be delayed until spring 2025, and Insider Gaming’s Tom Hendersen had the scoop as to why.

According to Henderson’s information, there are a few reasons for the delay. One of them is the standard desire to fine tune and polish the game, an unsurprising reason for a common occurrence in the video game industry. The other reason, however, came from another game.

Ubisoft recently published what they had hoped to be a hit Star Wars game, Outlaws, but buggy performance and a lack of glowing reviews led to a less-than-hoped-for sales performance, with sales only passing the 1 million units mark at the time of Henderson’s article last week. According to him, this was apparently a red flag for Ubisoft, especially with such a volatile video game environment over the last year. It seemed to be enough to cause Ubisoft to exercise caution over rushing a game to market and get them to hold the launch until the spring.

It also was reported that one of the reasons is due to the reaction to Yasuke being in the game. Yasuke is an historical figure, the infamous African Samurai, who has been the target of much of the internet’s racists. Henderson reported that one of the reasons for the delay to the spring that coincides with the cautionary tale of Outlaws was the Yasuke inclusion. He’s not being removed from that game, but they are doing some tweaking to his role in the game and listening to experts and playtester feedback.

It’s important to note that none of this has to do with the reception of Yasuke’s reveal online. Henderson pointed out that the game was playtested by players and cultural experts before the reveal, and they suggested some changes that Ubisoft seems to be taking into consideration. Henderson also learned that the historical experts that are usually brought in for games like this were apparently brought onto the project much later than usual, which could perhaps explain the Yasuke issues they are addressing.

In slightly related news, Henderson’s exclusives also revealed today that Ubisoft is actively working on a co-op mode for the game, set to release after the game’s launch. It’s another point of interest that fans have had for some time. Whether it will be successful and work smoothly remains to be seen.

Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will be released on February 14, 2025, on major platforms.
