Anthony Daniels Celebrated 45 Years As C-3PO
Star Wars has been in our hearts for about 44 years. In fact, the original trilogy film's release will have its 45th anniversary next year. Last week, Threepio himself, Anthony Daniels, made an Instagram post containing a photo of himself holding the script for A New Hope (simply titled Star Wars at the time) in his hands.
“Page 28, exactly 45 years ago, C-3PO spoke for the very first time. Something about moisture vaporators. I know. I was there”
Daniels wrote this on his Instagram post, probably referring to his first day of shooting for Star Wars back in March 1976. Anthony Daniels has been a huge part of Star Wars. His character, the protocol droid C-3PO, has been in all of the saga films, and even had a cameo in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Beyond that, Daniels also had a cameo in Solo: A Star Wars story as a human character.
In November of 2020, Daniels spoke to ComicBook.com about the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special. During the interview, Daniels was asked if he was interested in making an appearance on any of the upcoming Star Wars series. The actor said that he’d be happy to make an appearance in all of them if it was possible. He even mentioned that he would love to have a cameo in The Mandalorian.
During a CinemaBlend interview, the actor was asked if he had any plans on retiring. He told CinemaBlend that he has no plans on retiring from acting, or from playing C-3PO, at least for a very long time.
Threepio’s journey in the Skywalker saga may have ended, but that does not mean that his story has ended. In this humble writer’s opinion, our favorite protocol droid has more stories to tell, and many more adventures to experience. There is a possibility that we might see Threepio in the upcoming Andor series. How could this take place? Well, Cassian could go visit Senator Organa and Captain Raymus Antilles for a mission. This would be a perfect opportunity to give us another cameo for our favorite protocol droid.
While Anthony Daniels could retire from wearing the suit in the future, he could still provide the voice for Threepio in any of the series, or possibly movie cameos, the character might have in the future. You might take the man out of the suit, but Anthony Daniels' voice for Threepio is something you can never replace.
Even if Threepio doesn't appear in any of the upcoming series or in any of the upcoming films, he can still live through video games, comic books, and novels. Anthony Daniels is a huge part of the Star Wars fan community, and he knows that even if he were to retire from playing our favorite golden protocol droid, Threepio will live in the hearts of Star Wars fans for many generations to come.
George Lucas once said that the original Star Wars was meant to be told from the point of view of two droids. This is why the very first line we hear from the movie comes from Threepio himself. Lots of people don’t realize the amazing arc that Threepio goes through the entire saga. He goes from being a service droid who’s always scared of trying new things, and of risking his life, to an agent of the Resistance. We all see how Threepio serves mostly as a service droid during the prequel era, working alongside his best friend R2-D2, and helps defeat the Empire, and the we all see him commit a sacrifice of sorts in Episode IX.
Anthony Daniels not only played one of the most beloved characters from the Star Wars universe, but also gave life to a character who, if look deeply, is revealed to have an amazing character arc.
