Because we’re hitting a new age of video game adaptations, it’s no surprise that the mega-popular sandbox game would eventually find its way onto the screen in some form or another. Now we will soon. Netflix has announced that it will create an animated TV series based on the game. According to IGN, the game will “feature an original story, new characters, and showcase the world of Minecraft in a new light.”

This could potentially be one of Netflix’s new flagship properties; one that draws in millions of viewers and gives the streaming service a much-needed boost in the same vein as Squid Game and Tiger King. Uh… probably not, Squid Game was a fascinating fresh story, and Tiger King was an insane tale that appeared when we were all locked in our houses during the pandemic, but that’s likely what Netflix is hoping for with Minecraft. The name alone will probably draw in a lot of viewers, as the game remains as popular now as when it was released in 2009. Netflix says the show is coming “soon” but has not indicated what that means.

With a property as beloved as Minecraft, there will be high expectations from the fans to make it good. More Fallout (89% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and less Halo (61% approval rating.) The demand for video game content has never been higher, so we’ll see if this new show meets the mark.
