Andy Serkis Is Officially Confirmed To Return As Alfred Pennyworth In 'The Batman: Part ll'
At the start of the month, Matt Reeves revealed an exciting but unsurprising cast member for The Batman: Part II. Andy Serkis, the actor behind Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the recent role of Kino Loy in Star Wars: Andor, will reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth. The butler nearly met his end in The Batman but survived to find his way to the next film.
Although Serkis is already confirmed to return to the silver screen, the actor’s focus points in a different direction. In an interview with GQ, Serkis talked about his experiences with producing and directing:
“I don’t have a burning desire to play [anyone]. What I do want is to go back to the stage. That’s one thing I want to do for sure — and I’m terrified of it.”

Despite Serkis’ desire to pivot his career from the screen to the stage, Matt Reeves praised him for his performance in The Batman:
“He is a genius. I remember when I signed on to The Batman, one of the first decisions I made, I said ‘Andy, I want you to play Alfred, and I want to make it really emotional. Because I want people to see your face – not some avatar – and to understand truly what an incredible actor you are.’”
The Batman: Part II is scheduled to release in movie theaters in October 2025. Perhaps by then, Serkis will find an opportunity to return to the world of live theater. In the meantime, fans can enjoy his many talents in films and audiobooks.
