'Andor' Set Photos Reveal Krennic-Looking Imperial Uniform
We have long been aware that a Rogue One prequel about Cassian Andor has been in the pipeline for live-action Star Wars shows slated for release on Disney+. Announced last December to simply be titled Andor, the series is said to begin five years before Rogue One. It will follow Cassian Andor's involvement in the Rebellion against the Empire, even before he meets the loveable droid K-2SO. (Alan Tudyk has said that he will not be in the first season but will appear later in the series.)
Now, it appears that set photos for the series have made their way onto the internet. The following images and tweets come from Twitter user @Davidintheforc1:
Notice how in the background we see Imperials sporting uniforms akin to that worn by Orson Krennic in Rogue One. Given the distance, it is difficult to make out the faces of the Imperials to see whether either of them are Ben Mendelsohn himself reprising the role of Orson Krennic.
Some might say that it would not make sense for Krennic to be part of this series since it is Cassian's story and he has not met Krennic yet. However, I would point viewers toward the direction of Better Call Saul, a prequel to Breaking Bad that, while focusing primarily on the future Saul Goodman before he meets Walter White, still manages to show what goes on with other key players from the parent series in the years leading up to Walter White's encounters with them. Some of them Saul does not even interact with right away. Hypothetically, Andor could have sort of a panoramic view of the galaxy, showing whatever is going on with Andor and the Rebellion and then shifting to the point of view of the Imperials working within the Empire.
All that being said, viewers should probably not get their hopes up too high. Mendelsohn has never been announced to be part of this series. He is not among the names of actors who have been officially announced to have roles in the show. Plus, the uniform may not be as rare as one might think. After all, we have seen Yularen in similar attire way back in the original Star Wars film in 1977, as well as in Star Wars Rebels. Even when Rebels was on the air, Lucasfilm surprisingly showed restraint when it came to Krennic, who is mentioned in the series but never appears in it, even after many other familiar characters from other media appear. It is possible that they may have a similar approach to the character when Andor airs. It could work either way. If he were to appear, it would just depend on the execution. He would need to have a role that really serves the story somehow.
Even if Krennic never appears in the series, it is still nice to see that the makers of the show are staying consistent with the visual language of this era. It is a good sign that the show will fit neatly as a prequel to Rogue One. A few other outfits that we see (the ones with capes) seem like they could belong to senators or other prominent figures whom we see in the briefing room on Yavin IV in Rogue One. It feels like the people behind this show are taking notes and accounting for what this show needs to look like. Years from now, it will be interesting to see whether this show can be watched by first-timers prior to Rogue One, with the film acting as an epic finale.
