An Anonymous Actor Involved In ‘Batgirl’ Speaks Out About The Film’s Cancellation

Batman and Batgirl speaking to each other

Much like Gotham City, it seems the internet never sleeps. Following Warner Bros.’s decision to pull the upcoming Batgirl from release, we’ve seen reactions to this shocking decision from all corners of the DC fandom. Many have pointed out that Batgirl was to be the first DC film since Catwoman to star a woman of color, played by Leslie Grace, as well as the first to include a transgender character, played by trans Asian actress Ivory Aquino.

Others such as Kevin Smith have criticized the company’s decision to cancel Batgirl while moving forward with The Flash, starring an actor wanted for multiple crimes and under investigation for numerous allegations. Since the initial report of the film’s shelving, thousands of DC fans have been using the hashtag #ReleaseBatgirl to campaign for Batgirl’s official release either in theaters or on streaming. But the backlash against this decision isn’t only limited to fandom.

In response to a column on IndieWire about the situation, an anonymous actor from Batgirl shared his experiences and feelings towards the movie’s cancellation. The actor stated the following. “I am very offended by what happened and feel terrible for the directors and Leslie Grace, who were all wonderful to work with, as well as all of the technicians. It was an enormous, rewarding challenge to make this movie during Covid, and during the cold weather in Glasgow. None of these things matter to an imbecile like [David Zaslav]. His cowardice is breathtaking. I am glad I got to participate and I wish the best for all those involved - except the suits at Warner Brothers. But they all get replaced sooner than later.”

Naturally, the rest of the cast and crew may feel similarly toward Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and his choice to cancel such an expensive film that was so close to completion. The choice is also notably not going over well with other companies as Warner Bros. has seen their stocks decrease following the cancellation of Batgirl and various other projects. By withholding Batgirl from a public release, Warner Bros. seems to be damaging its profits and reputation more than it would’ve been if they simply gave the film an official release. At the end of the day, only time will tell if Warner Bros. does ultimately decide to put out the movie and allow the cast and crew’s hard work to be seen by the waiting public. Batgirl may have fallen for now, but it may still pick itself back up again.
