An Adaptation Of The Bestselling Novel 'Klara And The Sun' Is In The Works And Taika Waititi Is In Talks To Direct
Klara and the Sun, a bestselling novel by author Kazuo Ishiguro may be in the works for a film adaptation with Taika Waititi currently in talks to direct under Sony’s 3000 Pictures. Deadline reports that Dahvi Waller is working on writing the screenplay for the project. Klara and the Sun follows Klara, a robot operated by solar power with the title of Artificial Friend or AF. She is also the narrator of the story.
Klara is eventually purchased by a young girl named Josie, who has a chronic illness. Klara believes due to her own observations that the sun has healing properties for humans and takes her role in Josie’s life very seriously. This novel was published in March 2021 and debuted on the New York Times Best Sellers list in the number three spot for Hardcover Fiction and was also a March 2021 Book Club pick for Good Morning America.

Waititi is no stranger to the world of Sci-Fi and Fantasy – with credits to his name such as the 2014 film, What We Do in the Shadows: Interviews with some Vampires to 2022s Thor: Love and Thunder. He also directed an episode of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian titled “Chapter 8: Redemption.” Deadline reports that once the film deal is officially made, it is likely that Klara and Josie’s story will be his next film. Star Wars fans need not worry though, Waititi has expressed that his interest in working with Lucasfilm has not changed. Deadline reports that he is committed to directing a film for the franchise sometime next year.
