In 1982, Poltergeist was released - a cult classic horror movie about a young girl, Carol Anne, who is kidnapped by spirits from the other side. Soon, the world of Poltergeist will come back to life in a new television series. The original movie starred Heather O’Rourke as Carol Anne Freeling with Craig T. Nelson playing her father, Steve, and JoBeth Williams playing her mother, Diane. It was directed by Tobe Hooper, known for his work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and was written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor. The iconic line, “They’re here!,” and several scenes from the movie would be parodied for years to come, including in Family Guy,  American Dad!, and Scary Movie 2.

The success of Poltergeist continued with two movie sequels in 1986 and 1988 and a TV series, Poltergeist: The Legacy, which ran on Showtime from 1995-1999. O’Rourke was one of the only original cast members to return for both movie sequels, with the last being released after her untimely death at the age of 12. Later, there was also a 2015 remake of the original story, produced by MGM and 20th Century Fox, which didn’t garner the success of the original film.

The new series is in early development with Amazon MGM Studios. It will be produced by Amblin Television, Steven Spielberg’s television production company. There is not a writer known to be on the project yet, but Amblin business partners, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce. Amazon is also reported to be continuing the stories of other MGM properties since acquiring the rights to them in 2021. Alongside the upcoming Poltergeist series, more stories may be coming soon in the worlds of Barbershop, Stargate, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Legally Blonde.
