After Recent Layoffs Were Announced By Microsoft, 343 Industries Will No Longer Develop 'Halo'
Microsoft is laying off 10,000 employees. The layoffs will hit the whole company, including their video game developers. The three studios caught in the layoffs are 343 Industries, Bethesda Game Studios, and The Coalition. The Coalition currently develops Gears of War. Bethesda Game Studios currently develops Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein, and the re-releases of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. 343 Industries currently develops Halo. Pierre Hintze, head of 343 Industries, said in an email that the company has, “made the difficult decision to restructure elements of our team, which means some roles are being eliminated.” Almost one-third of 343 Industry’s workforce will be let go. Creative director, Joe Staten, was brought in in 2020 to help with the launch of Halo Infinite. He will be leaving his position and moving to Xbox Publishing.
As a result of the layoffs, 343 Industries will no longer be developing the Halo series. The company will still be involved with Halo, however. They will maintain the game’s engine. They will also oversee new games and content. The development job itself will be handled by third-party developers. 343 Industries will continue to support certain aspects of the game such as Halo Infinite’s multiplayer and things like battle passes.
