After Consumer Backlash, M&M's Announces Maya Rudolph Will Replace Iconic Spokescandies
The Mars candy brand recently made some changes to their famous M&M’s spokescandies. In addition to a women’s empowerment campaign and the introduction of a purple peanut M&M, they also changed the green M&M’s heeled boots into sensible sneakers. This caused a backlash on many right-wing news sites, and even the Washington Post argued that Green’s new shoes were anti-progressive, leading thousands to sign a petition to keep Green sexy.
Amid the backlash, Mars released a Tweet announcing an indefinite pause on their M&M’s spokescandies. During the pause, Maya Rudolph, best known for her role in Bridesmaids and as a Saturday Night Live regular, will serve as the new spokesperson under the title “Chief of Fun.” For her part, Rudolph is thrilled to work with the brand; when the news broke, she announced, “I am a lifelong lover of the candy and I feel like it’s such an honor to be asked to be part of such a legendary brand’s campaign.”

Rudolph’s first appearance as M&M’s spokesperson will be aired during this year’s Super Bowl LVII. Mars landed a top spot in a 2020 rebroadcast Betty White Snickers commercial, so it will take some work to top their past successes. However, the candy brand announced a sponsored conversation-starting ad during the Super Bowl. Despite this controversy, M&M’s will likely be a staple sweet of Super Bowl gatherings across the country.
