After Being Dormant For Years, The Blockbuster Website Just Went Live Again, And It Has People Speculating On What It Could Mean
The saying how everything in life makes a come back appears to ring true. The famous movie rental chain Blockbuster’s website is showing activities again. Fans who periodically visit the website for updates recently discovered a landing page with the company’s logo and a cryptic message: “We are working on rewinding your movie.” The internet soon went ablaze with questions wondering what was in store for the beloved movie rental company.
Blockbuster first opened in 1985 and was able to maintain 9,000 brick-and-mortar stores at one time at the peak of the company’s career. There is no clear indication of where Blockbuster plans to go next or if any new project is in the works.

Tama Leaver, a professor of internet studies at Australia’s Curtin University, shared an insight with Washington Post regarding the company:
“Blockbuster is infused with nostalgia. There used to be a real social ritual in going to Blockbuster and browsing titles. Even though we know the brand has died a horrible, slow death, I think there’s an affection people have, and Blockbuster has become an icon about everything that was great in the VHS era.”
Adding to the mystery, Blockbuster’s Twitter account tweeted, “New business idea: we’re going to come back as a bank and use VHS and DVDs as currency. Time to go visit your mom.”
The company filed for bankruptcy in 2010 and was purchased by Dish Network the following year. There is only one franchise brick-and-mortar store today located in Bend, Oregon. The manager of the location is not certain what the website update is in reference to but expresses excitement for what is potentially coming for the brand.
