Closing out Black History Month, Disney released the new animated miniseries 'Iwájú' on Disney+ on February 28th.

'Iwájú' is the result of a collaboration between Disney and Pan-African studio “Kugali Media,” expanding on Disney producing more projects centered around African stories told by storytellers from around the continent. The first of these projects was the sci-fi anthology ‘Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire’, produced by the South Africa’s “Triggerfish Animation Studios.”

The series is made up of ten short films from various African filmmakers, each centering around a different culture. The series first released in July 2023. However, Iwájú is Disney’s first time teaming up with an African studio and creative team to produce a full-length series.

Set in a futuristic Nigeria, 'Iwájú' tells the story of ten-year-old Tola (voiced by Simisola Gbadamosi) from Lagos Island, and tech-wizard Kole (voiced by Siji Soetan) from the mainland, and explores themes of class struggle and economic inequality, setting a thematic parallel to the present-day struggles of Nigeria, while also imagining a high-tech vision for the country’s future.

The series was first announced in 2020 with an anticipated 2022 release, but this would be delayed due to the pandemic. The series was written and directed by Kugali co-founder Olufiyako “Ziki” Adeola.

All six episodes of 'Iwájú' are now streaming on Disney+.
