According To Tony Gilroy, ‘Star Wars: Andor’ Did Not Use The Volume To Film

It is no surprise to Star Wars fans that the franchise has been famous for its ability to improve on techniques and technologies used in the film industry. That was seen in both the original and prequel trilogy. While the originals used models for the various vehicles and beings, the prequels used green screens (a lot!) when shooting. For the development of The MandalorianThe Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, a new type of stage was created, called The Volume

The Volume consists of a round wall, almost 360° around the actors. This solved many problems concerning lighting and a phenomenon known as “spill” reflections when it was necessary to add special effects to the scenes. Furthermore, using the Unreal Engine, a set of creative virtual tools, directors can change the background without difficulty, making it much easier for special effects teams and shooting. According to comingsoon.net, this became so popular that several replicas of this set are being constructed around the globe to meet the needs of studios.

Although it was previously used for other shows, the new Andor series, set to premiere on September 21st on Disney+, is not going the same way. Filmmaker Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and will be an executive producer for Andor, told Empire that “we’re old school,” meaning they will shoot the series’ episodes in real places. Actress Fiona Shaw also gave her opinion on the subject, saying that even though it is “breathtaking,” others pointed out a few logistics issues. Diego Luna mentioned a specific case that provoked different feelings in him. He told Empire that the crew and the actors had to walk up a mountain to shoot one scene, but the result was “amazing, like being on another planet.”
