Recently, VideoGameChronicles reported and verified a set of files found in the Spider-Man Remastered release that raised the big question, is there the possibility for a PlayStationNetwork hub similar to Steam?

It seems so! VGC found the files named “PSNAccountLinked” and “PSNLinkingEntitlements.” It only makes sense to conclude these files were a project in the works; whether as forgotten files or part of the groundwork to allow for a smooth transition into Sony's own game launcher.

A good route to continue speculating is reading up on the most recent press release found on their investor relations portal from May 18th, 2022 as to the current corporate strategy. Under section 3 labeled as ‘Entertainment Businesses that “Moves People's Hearts”’ they go on to say:

“Sony Interactive Entertainment signed definitive agreements for the acquisition of Bungie, Inc., which represents a major step in becoming more multi-platform and enhancing Sony’s live game services. *As of the end of March 2022.“

Many should already know about Bungie, an American video game developer responsible for many games such as Destiny and Halo. This step may be old news, but it certainly was what they needed to grow as they have also just released a new section of the website dedicated to their PSN games on our personal computers! The company's got a bright future with its continued collection of creators both local and worldwide.

Looking further into the press release explores greater possibilities than just a potential PC hub though. The last two sections touch on the futuristic “Kando Space, an initiative in the metaverse/a live network space” and as it's labeled “Technology that supports the evolution of entertainment, Sensing and A.I.” Now that Sony is dancing with their own developers in creating a competing virtual reality metaverse and the technology for it, it's only a matter of time before the PlayStation Network puts out an upgrade.
