Coming at Christmas 2025 is the third installment of director James Cameron’s Avatar series. This one will be called Avatar: Fire and Ash. Cameron and stars Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington made the announcement at D23. The previous two Avatar films, Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, both made over $1 billion at the box office, so there is a lot of anticipation for the new movie.

Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash were filmed at the same time. Cameron explained that he wanted to avoid an obvious jump in the actors’ ages. They are being released years apart because of intensive post-production work.

For those nervous about this being a retread of the previous films, Cameron says there’s no need to worry, “The new film is not what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.” He also said, “The characters are so alive, and it feels so real. It's also got very high emotional stakes — more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”

The third movie will introduce a new tribe called the Na’vi. This translates to the Ash People. Their leader, Varang, will likely be the antagonist. Cameron said that a new character will be someone the audience will, “love to hate.”

Cameron has also talked about there being up to seven Avatar movies. If Fire and Ash does well, fans can expect to see a lot more of the planet Pandora in the future.
