Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki revealed his plans to leave retirement. This is a change of pace from when the acclaimed director announced his retirement after the release of Princess Mononoke in 1997, Spirited Away in 2001, and The Wind Rises in 2013. Although Miyazaki released a short called Boro the Caterpillar during his latest retirement, many thought it would stick this time. As Miyazaki’s latest film The Boy and the Heron prepares for a North American release, many fans are thankful this won’t be his last film.

Miyazaki is responsible for such films as My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Many of these movies served as a first foray into anime and were a defining point of childhood. According to Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka, “He [Miyazaki] is currently working on ideas for a new film. He comes into his office every day and does that. This time, he’s not going to announce his retirement at all. He’s continuing working as he’s always done.” Studio Ghibli fans can breathe a sigh of relief that the director behind many of their favorite films has no current plans to leave the world of filmmaking. The Boy and the Heron will be released to North American audiences on December 8.
