A U.S. Congressman Will Swear His Oath Of Office On A Rare 'Superman' Comic Book
What does Superman stand for? Well, with the protection of citizens and the support of equitable justice in mind, what better, albeit creative way to be sworn into congressional office than to swear your oath on the last son of Krypton? If nothing else, newly elected California congressman Robert Garcia is telling his voters a little bit extra about himself as he plans on taking his oath not just on the U. S. Constitution, but also on a photograph of his late parents, his citizenship certificate, and the first issue of the Superman comic book series. One would be hard-pressed to find a better role model for a leader than Clark Kent/Superman. He may be fictional, but that doesn’t subtract anything from what he represents.
Garcia is the former mayor of Long Beach. He tweeted his excitement, stating that he “will be proudly sworn-in to Congress on the U.S. Constitution. Underneath the Constitution will be 3 items that mean a lot to me personally. A photo of my parents who I lost to COVID, my citizenship certificate & an original Superman.” He will be borrowing the #1 comic book from the Library of Congress. Garcia had a response at the ready for his naysayers as well. “For all of you upset that I still read comics and suggesting that I need to do more serious reading…anyone who understands comics knows that comics are an essential part of American fiction,” he tweeted. “And the lessons learned are invaluable. It’s serious shit.”
