Saturday, April 12th, at 1pm EST, 10am PDT, and 6pm BST. Gaming company Bungie wants the internet to remember this date and time so they can release more information about their next major game.

But Marathon is not new, not entirely. The series was one of the earliest releases by Bungie, with the first installment dropping in 1994, followed by two sequels. It centers around an alien attack on Earth’s first extra solar colony in the Tau Ceti star system being fought off by a cyborg protagonist but also deals with human political machinations, complex AI, and other subjects which have gone on to play a big role in Bungie’s other franchises.

Bungie has also never fully forgotten the games. Marathon is prominently referenced in the Destiny universe, where the recent introduction of a “para verse” (their terminology for a multiverse) in the background of their storytelling offers a handy explanation for cosmetics and items appearing in other Bungie games and even those of other IPs.

This new iteration of Marathon, however, is different from its decades-old kin. Described in past releases and leaks of information as an extraction shooter, the first teaser trailer showed visuals as stunning and strange as those found in this new teaser. The gameplay reveal set for the end of this week should provide a wealth of information on the progress of this franchise reboot, and might come alongside a release date.

But, Bungie has had a rocky time of late, and some reporting has suggested Marathon is still years away from release. We’ll have to wait and see what Saturday has in store for fans of sci-fi gaming.
