'A Nightmare On Elm Street' Star Robert Englund Reveals His One Condition To Return From Retirement
Certain horror performances are forever tied to certain characters, no matter how many sequels/remakes we get. Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter (sorry, Brian Cox fans), Tony Todd as Candyman, Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, the list goes on and on. One of the performances on the list is Robert Englund as the iconic Freddy Kreuger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. While the sequels definitely followed the rules of diminishing returns, Englund always gave his all with the character, making countless viewers too scared to go to sleep. However, it’s been fourteen years since the last Nightmare on Elm Street movie and twenty-one since Englund was behind the makeup. It seems like the time is done.
But Englund himself hasn’t closed the door.
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, he said:
“There’s no Freddy left in me. I could possibly voice a really high-end, animated version. That would be nice to be asked to do, but I know I can’t do the fight scenes more than one take now, one angle. I just can’t be snapping my head or anything like that. I’m an old dog! Give me a break.”

It makes sense. Englund is seventy-seven years old. There’s no way he’d be able to bring the physicality required for that role. He was thirty-seven the first time he was transformed into Freddy, and he doesn’t have that vitality in him anymore. Who would? Doing a Nightmare on Elm Street animated project would be interesting, though unlikely. It would most likely be as some sort of parody of Freddy in a show as opposed to a real Nightmare project.
Whether Englund returns to the role in any capacity or not remains to be seen. Either way, he’ll still go down in history as an undeniable heavyweight in horror.
