The Batman, which starred Robert Pattinson as a detective noir embodiment of the caped crusader has been ordered for HBO Max. The spinoff series will follow Colin Farrell’s depiction of The Penguin as he rises through the ranks of the dark and foreboding streets of Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Based upon DC’s character created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, The Penguin, whose real name is Oswald Cobblepot seems very deserving of a stand-alone, origin project. Farrell says “The world that Matt Reeves created for ‘The Batman’ is one that warrants a deeper gaze...”

Penguin actors

The Penguin, who stands as one of Batman’s most menacing foes, has been portrayed by numerous actors throughout the years. From Burgess Meredith to Danny DeVito to Robin Lord Taylor, Farrell is the latest to embody this iconic villain. With Colin’s new approach, he introduces a villain that is less of a caricature and frighteningly more sadistic.

The Batman debuted in 2022 and has grossed over $250 million at the global box office to date. This incredible success and the widespread approval by critics have clearly paved the way for Reeve’s vision to expand.
