As the 60th anniversary of Dr. Who is approaching, David Tennant is returning to his role as the fourteenth doctor. A recent post to Twitter by the official Dr. Who Twitter account featured Tennant’s character alongside the new sonic screwdriver, accompanied by a tweet that read “The Fourteenth Doctor. Why did this face come back? To say goodbye?” The visuals from the post can be seen below.

The Sonic Screwdriver has a lot of history in the franchise. It was first wielded by the second doctor played by Patrick Troughton in 1968 in Fury From The Deep. It is a versatile tool that most doctors can use. Its uses include unlocking the majority of doors, tracking and monitoring most forms of life, and also has several technological capabilities, among many other properties. The device disappeared for a while during the tenure of the fifth doctor, until it reappeared in 2005, where it has been a mainstay ever since. It has, however, seen many redesigns as it has been lost, damaged, destroyed, or otherwise unusable at times.

It is currently unknown if the fifteenth doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, will also wield the same tool.
