Everything We Know About The Ubisoft ‘Star Wars’ Game So Far
If you are like me, you have been waiting for any shred of news about Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars game. The Game Awards seemed like a prime place to reveal a trailer for the game, details about what genre it would fall into, or, dare I say, a release window. However, The Game Awards this year gave us a different Star Wars surprise. Quantic Dream’s Star Wars Eclipse looks like it will be a story full of choices befitting the galaxy far far away. While a new Star Wars game, from Quantic Dream no less, is certainly exciting, it left several fans, myself included, wondering about Ubisoft’s Star Wars game.
At the beginning of this year, Lucasfilm Games announced that they were partnering with two publishers for two new games. One of those games would be an Indiana Jones game published by Bethesda and developed by Machine Games. The other game would be a Star Wars title developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. Obviously, this would effectively end the exclusivity partnership Lucasfilm had with EA for publishing games. Although, that exclusivity was never officially stated and merely inferred based on a statement EA CFO Blake Jorgensen made. Even with the end of the exclusivity, EA will continue to publish Star Wars games as well.

The big takeaway was the announcement of a Ubisoft Star Wars game. That alone is enough to get any fan of Star Wars or video games excited, but what do we know about this project? Unfortunately not a lot. Lucasfilm Games and Ubisoft have been pretty quiet about the project aside from a few bits of information here and there. Most of the information we have comes from a Wired article from January. We know that the game will be developed by Massive Entertainment, the same studio behind Tom Clancy’s The Division and the upcoming Avatar game. Julian Gerighty, who was the director on The Division 2 and The Crew will also serve as the creative director of the game. The game will run on Massive’s Snowdrop engine which has powered several Ubisoft games from The Division to Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. According to Ubisoft, it is will also be a story-driven, open-world game.
Aside from that, there are not a lot of other details about the game. Some have speculated that it will be a single-player adventure game, but this has not been confirmed. It likely stems from Ubisoft’s announcement that the game will be story-driven. However, with Massive’s most recent game being The Division, which is an online shooter, it would make sense for the game to have some sort of multiplayer component to it. That doesn’t mean that the game can’t still have a heavy focus on a single-player story. All the recent Far Cry games and even the old Assassin’s Creed games featured multiplayer components that were largely optional and could be ignored if the player wanted. The game is also heavily rumored to feature the infamous “Ubisoft Towers,” where player has to climb up a point of interest to reveal the game’s map. However, that one has no true basis for speculation other than previous Ubisoft games. That does not mean their inclusion would be a negative one though. The towers used in those games could be incredibly fun in a Star Wars setting.
As of now, that is the only information we have on Ubisoft’s Star Wars game. While several aspects can be speculated on, there is no way of knowing for sure. There is no word on the setting of the game, where it takes place in the timeline, who the main character will be, or even the game’s genre. The game is still in the early stages, so much so that they are still hiring for positions on the project. It could still be a while before any more details are revealed. Regardless, the game has a lot of potential coming from a proven studio and publisher who has churned out some of the best game franchises out there. I am certainly excited to see what they can do in the Star Wars sandbox.
