Boba Fett's Most Annoying Nickname Has Been Revealed By ‘Star Wars’

One of the universally acknowledged best characters in the Star Wars universe is Boba Fett. He is one of the best bounty hunters in the galaxy. He has an iconic suit and ship. He is ruthless, yet suave, and quite a badass fighter. Yet in the one-shot comic Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – Jabba the Hutt #1, he is given quite the nickname that just does not seem to fit his character at all.

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – Jabba the Hutt #1, written by Justina Ireland, Ibraim Roberson, and Luca Pizzari tells the story of Boba Fett just before and during the events of the line-wide Star Wars crossover event, which has been dubbed War of the Bounty Hunters. This particular war is over Han Solo who has just been recently frozen in carbonite. The bounty hunters want ownership of him, especially since Boba Fett appears to have lost possession of the carbonite frozen Han Solo. In this particular comic, we see Jabba the Hutt sending a new bounty hunter named Deva Lompop after Boba Fett after he has failed to bring Han back to Tatooine in a timely manner. As the story jumps between the present and the past, it also appears that Deva has worked together with Boba Fett on a prior mission assigned by Jabba the Hutt. Even though the storyline is gripping, that is not what grabbed the attention of readers. What is worth noting is the strange nickname that she gives him, which does not fit at all with his cool demeanor or his sure shooting skills.

Throughout the comic issue, Deva Lompop keeps calling Boba Fett "pup.” It is pretty badass for her to make up a nickname like that for Jabba’s favorite bounty hunter, even if it is a bad one and does not fit with Boba’s persona at all. Another problem with this strange nickname is that Deva seems to suggest that Boba is new to the business of bounty hunting, which of course, by this time, he is not. It could also be, from Deva's point of view, a jive at Boba being Jabba’s pet of some sort, which is definitely not correct. It is unclear as to how many times Deva and Boba have encounter each other in the past, but it could be why Deva is able to affectionately call Boba “pup” without much retaliation from him. It could honestly just be a really weird nickname that she gave Boba from perhaps a history that the two have from a pre-War of the Bounty Hunters. However, there is a problem with this particular theory. Deva is not the only character to use this nickname. Somehow, she gets Boba to call himself “pup” in their little scuffle at the end of their joint mission. Jabba the Hutt also refers to Boba as "pup" at the end of this issue. While the name may be annoying, it is extremely funny coming from Jabba the Hutt.

Boba Fett is definitely one of the best names in the entire Star Wars universe, and Deva calling Boba “pup” every opportunity that she possibly can is highly amusing, weird, and does not make any sense whatsoever to Star Wars fans. There is no set-up. No precedence to it. It just takes us all by surprise. Maybe she just enjoys poking fun at our normally stoic bounty hunter, trying to get him to loosen up just a tad bit. Despite this newly minted nickname, Boba Fett will always be remembered as one of the most efficient, successful, and awesome bounty hunters in the Star Wars universe. As for the extremely head-scratching strange nickname “pup”? Let’s just say, it should not be something to lose sleep about.
