Why Grogu Will Not Stay With Luke To Be A Jedi
Some of the most dramatic events in Star Wars occurred because of someone’s choice. Shmi Skywalker let her son Anakin choose to leave everything he knew to become a Jedi. This led to a series of terrible decisions by Anakin, most notably choosing to join the dark side because he thought it would save his wife. Ahsoka chose to leave the Jedi Order because of the way they assumed her guilt. Lastly, Luke chose to leave Tatooine and accept the call to adventure. At one time, George Lucas said Star Wars is about choosing good over evil. And now, another choice awaits us.
In The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” Jedi Master Luke Skywalker presents Yoda’s lightsaber and handmade chainmail gifted to Grogu by the Mandalorian Din Djarin. Master Luke tells Grogu he can either stay and Yoda’s lightsaber will be his, or take the chainmail and go with Din Djarin, foregoing his Jedi training. If he stays, the caveat is he can never see the Mandalorian again. It is a huge decision for a 50-year-old baby. According to The Rise of Kylo Ren #3 (2019), there is a clue on which way Grogu will choose.

The Rise of Kylo Ren is a four-issue miniseries written by Charles Soule that explores Ben Solo’s fall, his relationship with Snoke, and his decision to join the Knights of Ren. The series opens with Luke’s Jedi Temple already up in flames. Master Luke is nowhere to be found. The rest of the academy is dead except for Voe, Hennix, and Tai, who have just returned. In the chaos, Ben flees off-world, and his three classmates follow. In the ensuing battle, Ben kills Voe and Hennix, while Ren, leader of the Knights of Ren, kills Tai. Finally, Ben kills Ren and assumes the mantle of Master of the Knights of Ren.
Before all of this killing happens, Ben finds comfort by hanging around the Knights but struggles to understand what it will take to become a permanent member. He speaks of his past as a student at Skywalker’s Jedi Temple. Here is the clue on whether or not Grogu will stay with Luke or leave to go with Din Djarin. As Ben is speaking, he mentions that he was Luke’s first student, but the rest came not long after. Assuming he is telling the truth, and Ben was Luke’s first student, that would mean Grogu did not stay to become a Jedi.
To put things in perspective, at the time of the decision put forth by Luke to Grogu, Ben was only four years old. Ben did not begin his training with Luke until just before his tenth birthday. So there are approximately six years between Luke training Grogu and Ben becoming Luke’s first permanent student. Technically, Leia was Luke’s first student when she trained with him on Ajan Kloss while pregnant with Ben. So based on that bit of information, Grogu will not stay with Luke. Grogu’s decision will allow for more Lone Wolf and Cub episodes coming later this year.
With only one episode of The Book of Boba Fett remaining, it is unlikely that we will see Grogu’s decision this season now that Din is back on Tatooine and Luke’s part seems to be over. But, assuming Grogu does decide to go back to his adoptive father, where will the story go from there? Why did Grogu go with Luke in the first place? And did the unpleasant memory of the Jedi Purge influence Grogu’s decision? I believe Luke, Ahsoka, Grogu, and Din Djarin all have different paths to follow, and for whatever reason, the Force has brought them together at this time and place. In time, those reasons will reveal themselves.
