New Book Explains The Dyad From ‘The Rise of Skywalker’
Rise of Skywalker resulted in mixed emotions among fans. There were many who really did not like it and thought it completely ruined the Star Wars franchise (starting with The Last Jedi). There were also a few that did enjoy it and thought it wrapped the story up nicely. The ones who liked it thought it was the perfect end to the Skywalker Saga. Those that disliked it thought that it completely ruined George Lucas’s legacy. Despite everyone’s views, there is one thing that piqued a lot of interest. At the end of Rise of Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine reveals that Ben Solo/Kylo Ren and Rey are a Force dyad. This is something that has never really been discussed before. The concept answers a lot of questions brought up in The Last Jedi and on the internet. So what exactly is a Force dyad?
The Force dyad explains why Rey and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren could see each other and even connect by touching hands through the Force despite the great distance separating them. It was something that had not been seen in the Star Wars lore. However, we see this in The Last Jedi when Rey is on Ach-To and Kylo Ren is on his Star Destroyer. In The Rise of Skywalker when Rey and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren encounter Emperor Palpatine on Exegol, Rey, at one point, raises Anakin’s lightsaber over her head. It disappears and the camera cuts to Ben just when he pulls the same lightsaber seemingly out of thin air. This demonstrates that they can somehow transfer objects through the Force in addition to talking and connecting physically.

The one and only explanation given to fans is that that Rey and Ben are a dyad in the Force, a rare type of Force-bond that essentially join two individuals. This inevitably upset many fans while intriguing others. However, both sides would agree that more information is needed. Fans are finally getting their answer. An upcoming book will reveal more about this mysterious bond and what it means in the context of the Dark Side of the Force and the Sith.
This new book, revealed on Reddit by user u/Obversa, is titled Star Wars: The Secrets of the Sith. According to u/Obversa, this reference book of sorts by writer Marc Sumerk and illustrator Sergio Gómez Silván has an entire page dedicated to the topic of the Force dyad. It explains what it is, and even includes an image of what the Force bond actually looks like. The book was officially released on October 12, 2021 and is considered canon.
Secrets of the Sith describes this bond as a “fabled manifestation unseen for generations." This is similar to when Emperor Palpatine comments in Rise of Skywalker that the bond is “as strong as life itself.”
"There are few secrets of the Force that I have yet to master. But our Order's ancient prophecies speak of one fabled manifestation unseen for generations - a dyad. This pairing of two beings strong in the Force, linked together by an unbreakable bond, creates a power as strong as life itself."
Then, Secrets of the Sith delves in deeper than what Palpatine already mentions. It explains the history of the Force dyad, telling us that the concept predates the Rule of Two and was originally called “Doctrine of the Dyad.” Furthermore, the book points out that the Force dyad connection is able to unlock “a great number of abilities,” allowing the individual to become an “even more powerful Force wielder.”
"For a millennium, the Sith have adhered to the Rule of Two. But this decree is said to merely be a pale imitation of its predecessor, the Doctrine of the Dyad. Legends claim that two beings sharing this profound connection gain access to a great number of abilities - skills beyond the grasp of even the most powerful Force wielder."
The rest of the description explains some of the powers that we have already seen demonstrated in Rise of Skywalker. Interestingly, it claims that the Force dyad’s powers “know no limits.”
“Members of a dyad were believed to be capable of transferring their life force to heal others. Some could even pass physical objects through time and space in an instant. If two Sith were bonded so deeply as to transcend their physical beings, the power they could unlock together would know no limits."
Now that fans finally have an official explanation as to what the Force dyad is, we could conceivably see more of the concept in future Star Wars media. Perhaps the Force dyad could even come into play in Star Wars video games. The Knights of the Old Republic video game have mentioned a Force connection between Darth Revan and the Jedi Bastila Shan. As both Rise of Skywalker and Secrets of the Sith say that the Force dyad has been “unseen for generations,” perhaps the two is another Force dyad. With the upcoming remake of the video game, it would be interesting to see if the idea plays out in Darth Revan’s story. Even though the video game is not considered canon, we know fans would love to see his lore expanded in a film or television series.
With an entire page of a new Star Wars reference book dedicated to what the Force dyad actually is, there is definitely an opening for Lucasfilm to bring the idea into a film, Disney+ series, or a video game. It is not too far fetched to expand it further in print in a book or comic series either.
