Colin Trevorrow Talks Details On Star Wars 'Duel Of The Fates' Script
Any fan of Star Wars is no stranger to controversy. There was the reaction to the prequel movies back in the early 2000s, and of course, more recently, there is the debate over the sequels that is, unfortunately, still ongoing. It did not help when J. J. Abrams hinted at the sequels not having a plan for their trajectory, nor the news of director and writer changes for Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.
It did not help the situation when Colin Trevorrow's script for Episode IX leaked online. It was titled Duel of the Fates, a clear reference to the fan-favorite track from The Phantom Menace played during the lightsaber fight between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Darth Maul. When Trevorrow sat down with Mike Ryan of UPROXX to talk about his new movie, Jurassic World: Dominion, the topic of the particular leak came up.

Near the end of the interview, Mike Ryan brought up the Duel of the Fates leak and commented on the largely positive response from fans that read it. Even though Ryan tried to get an emotional reaction from Trevorrow, he was pretty tight-lipped about the leak:
“It was complicated.”
Trevorrow’s response in regards to his time writing the Duel of the Fates script came off like textbook PR as he talked about how grateful he was for Kathleen Kennedy taking him off the Episode IX project:
“I can say honestly I’m very grateful to Kathy for recognizing that she and I were never going to make a movie that we were both proud of together. And she’s been doing this for so long and she cares about me and I care about her and her family. And Frank and I are partners still. I’m a part of this group of incredible filmmakers, so it was a complicated moment, but now, having been able to do this and really feeling like this is what… I’m glad I did this. I’m deeply, deeply satisfied for having done this. I appreciate that she had the wisdom to see something that, honestly, I’m not sure I could’ve seen because I was so dialed in to the story I wanted to tell.“
Ryan tried to get more out of him, asking about his reaction to fan praise of the script, and all Trevorrow said was "It was a lot. I'll leave it with that."
Say what you will about the sequel trilogy, it was the culmination of over forty years of a franchise, encompassing generations of fans. It is understandable that there are a lot of emotions involved in wrapping up the Skywalker Saga. Needless to say, the Star Wars community, at least online, seems pretty divided over the reception of The Rise of Skywalker. We will never really know what Trevorrow's vision would have looked like outside the script, but it certainly would have been another deviation from the norm that The Last Jedi seemed to start.
