Netflix Announces 'The Sandman' Teaser Trailer During Geeked Week
The release date for the highly anticipated television adaptation of The Sandman has finally been announced along with a teaser trailer at Netflix’s Geeked Week. The journey of one of the seven Endless, the lord of dreams, Morpheus, to reclaim his greatness will be streamed on Netflix from August 5th, 2022. For the uninitiated, The Sandman is a much-beloved 1989–1996 dark fantasy graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg that is set within the DC universe. While the comic book series has garnered high praise and critical acclaim, its full-cast audio drama adaptation on Audible has also proved to be a fan favourite.
The scenes revealed in the trailer come very close to those depicted in the novel. At the beginning of the trailer, we find Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) to be trapped in the mortal world. We then see Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) being informed of his release as we witness the glorious escape of Morpheus after a long 72 years. The King of Dreams manages to return to his realm only to be told by the head librarian, Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), that his palace and realm are in tatters. Scenes with Dream (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), and John Dee with the dreamstone in hand (David Thewlis) flash by until we see Morpheus wearing his iconic helm determined to restore his kingdom (and his pride!). The final parts of the trailer show Morpheus with Matthew the Raven (voiced by Patton Oswalt) and a nervous Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook). Other cast includes Mark Hamill as the voice of Mervyn Pumpkinhead, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Joely Richardson as Ethel Cripps, Charles Dance as Robert Burgess, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, Sandra James-Young as Unity Kincaid, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, and Asim Chaudhry as Cain’s tortured brother, Abel.
RELATED:
The series has been co-created and produced by Neil Gaiman (American Gods, Good Omens), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy), and show-runner Allan Heiberg (Wonder Woman). Neil Gaiman, who says that he has been working for 34 years to bring the story to the screen, has revealed in the Geeked Week interview that the first season will be focused on Rose Walker’s arc. Rose Walker, in the novel, is looking for her lost brother, Jed. However, she does not know that she is a ‘Dream Vortex’ and thus has an important connection with Morpheus and the realm of dreams. It would be very interesting to see how this plot is dealt with and how the epic fantasy series is portrayed in live-action.
