Mark Hamill Finally Picked Up His Power Converters In Hilarious Twitter Post

It might have taken Luke Skywalker more than 40 years, but he finally got those power converters.

Ever since Luke's iconic whininess appeared in A New Hope, fans have poked fun at this Star Wars inside joke. It's a line easy to mock. One of the more lighthearted and memorable lines from A New Hope. Even Robot Chicken took a crude shot at it. And now Mark Hamill himself is in on it. Just like how Hayden Christensen acknowledges the funny awkwardness of the "I don't like sand" quote, Mark Hamill took to twitter with a photoshopped image of himself standing in front of Tosche Station, gleefully holding a power converter:

Hamill tweets that he "can finally cross this off my to-do list" with the (extremely) appropriate hashtag "BetterLateThanNever." Hey, with the insanity that was 2020, who can blame the tardiness? After all, his uncle made him finish those chores first. It wasn't Luke's fault R2-D2 ran off. One can't help but wonder if those long-abandoned power converters where still on Luke's mind while he dueled his father on the second Death Star.

The line has been memed about as much as the entire prequel saga, and Mark Hamill seems to relish in keeping his fans laughing. Hamill delivered the line with perfect young adult annoyance, and it's so easy to turn the situation into a joke. Here comes the hero of the story, and what does he do? Whines about wanting to leave the house. The line serves as a reminder that Luke is still just a kid, and makes Luke Skywalker relatable to the audience. Hamill told EW in 2016 that when filming this scene, he wanted to "make this as juvenile as I can so there's room for growth. And I sort of wanted to make it sound like I had four sisters and two bothers when you'd be in the car and they'd say things like, 'You said we could go to the mallllllllll.' So I wanted to give that flavor."

There was certainly room for growth - and now that Hamill and Luke are both well past their teenage years, he can stop whining about hitting the town to pick up some hardware. And who hasn't complained about wanting something that was promised but denied at the last minute? I know I whined "I don't want to take out the trash, Mom, I want to play with my Star Wars LEGOs!" when I was younger. The whininess of Hamill's delivery makes his scenes in Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi all the more unique - the audience gets to see Luke grow up with the story.

Hamill is no stranger to using his twitter platform for Star Wars jokes. The Skywalker actor keeps a strong presence online, posting numerous Star Wars memes or interacting with jokes from fans. Hamill's sense of humor regarding Star Wars is certainly welcomed, and this latest joke comes at a time where everyone can use a good laugh, especially while he's still fresh in our minds after a brief cameo in season 2 of The Mandalorian. It is a pleasure seeing Mr. Hamill continue to be so active in the Star Wars fandom, and there's definitely no shortage of comedy material he can dig through to keep us chuckling.

You have to give him credit, though - after avoiding getting those power converters, watching his family burn to death, getting swept up into a multi-generational galactic conflict, kissing his sister, and watching his new Jedi Temple crumble in flames, it is certainly refreshing to see Luke get what he so desperately wanted all along. Let's hope he puts them to good use.
