The Darksaber. A mysterious weapon that has been at the forefront of Star Wars content for the past few years. Fans first saw this weapon in The Clone Wars, then in Star Wars Rebels, and most recently in The Mandalorian. The weapon will be a major point in the upcoming season of the live-action show, as Bo-Katan wants the weapon which is currently in Din’s possession. These two characters, however, are not the only ones who have wielded this coveted weapon. There have been a few different characters that have held this weapon for various reasons since the creation of this blade.

Tarre Vizsla

Tarre Vizsla was the creator of the weapon, and therefore the first one to wield it. Canonically, very little is known about this character besides the fact he existed during the Old Republic era and was the only Mandalorian to ever be accepted as a Jedi. As part of his Jedi training, he was instructed to build his own lightsaber. Instead of going for the classic colors of blue and green, he went out of the spectrum. The Darksaber was pitch black, and shaped more like a katana. The character did wield the weapon during his time as leader of Mandalore, and it can be speculated that the Jedi took back the weapon after his death.

House Vizsla managed to take back the Darksaber during various Mandalorian and Jedi conflicts. The weapon was then passed on from one leader to another for many years. In The Clone Wars, we see Pre Vizsla wielding the weapon as he leads the Mandalorian Death Watch to reclaim Mandalore.

Maul

Maul won the weapon properly from Pre Vizsla, making him the proper ruler of Mandalore. However, this caused controversy within the Mandalorian ranks. This symbolic achievement gave Maul control over Death Watch and power among Mandalorians. He would use the weapon in conjunction with his regular lightsaber against General Grievous, Emperor Palpatine, and the Jedi. He lost the weapon briefly after his fight with Palpatine but eventually got it back.

Sabine Wren

In Star Wars Rebels, Sabine retrieved the Darksaber from the Nightsisters on Dathomir, making her the first Mandalorian since Pre Vizsla to wield the blade. She would learn to wield the weapon under the tutelage of Kanan.

She would wield the Darksaber on her mission to liberate the people of Mandalore. However, her claim was disputed as she did not defeat Maul in combat to acquire the weapon. Even though she briefly lost the weapon to her mother and Vicery Saxon, she would rightfully win it from Viceroy Saxon in combat. In the aftermath of the conflict, Sabine gave the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, whom she deemed the rightful ruler of Mandalore.

Moff Gideon

Moff Gideon is the leader of the Imperial Remnant forces in The Mandalorian. Somewhere between the end of The Clone Wars and the start of The Mandalorian Moff Gideon acquired the Darksaber. The story of how this happened is unknown but we can assume that the Empire’s purge of Mandalore is the cause of it. It is also unknown how exactly he defeated Bo-Katan Kryze for the coveted blade. However, Bo-Katan’s goal of fighting Gideon meant that he did win it from her in combat.

The Darksaber has been held by many hands throughout the years. Its wielder is considered the true ruler of Mandalore. However, the blade must be won in combat. This is one of Bo-Katan’s issues going into Season 3. Din does not want the weapon and tries to give it to Bo-Katan, but she cannot and will not accept it. This blade will come into play during the upcoming season, and it will be interesting to see whose hands it ends up in in the end.
